ECU Opens Outdoor Track Season This Weekend
March 24, 2022 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina track and field program turns its attention to the outdoor campaign this weekend when the Pirates head to the Raleigh Relays and Trojan Challenge.
Â
The Raleigh Relays are scheduled for March 24-26 at NC State's Dail Track/Soccer Complex while the Trojan Challenge will take place March 25-26 at Mount Olive's Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.
Â
"We are extremely excited to kick off the outdoor season this weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "Both teams have had the last three weeks to get healthy and put in some great work at practice. Our student-athletes are coming off a very good indoor season and are excited to continue that momentum into this weekend."
Â
As always, ECU uses the first handful of meets to prepare for the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. The meet is slated for May 13-15 at Wichita State's Cessna Stadium.
Â
One storyline to watch is the last season of Sommer Knight's decorated pole vault career. She is the reigning AAC champion and earned First Team All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a third-place finish. Knight also captured the league title at the recently-completed AAC Indoor Championships.
Â
Other Pirates looking to carry over momentum from the indoor season are Royal Burris and Brooke Stith. Burris claimed the 200-meter dash title in a time of 20.88 – the second-fastest mark in program history. He earned the AAC Most Outstanding Track Performance of the season as a result. Stith broke her own school record in the triple jump, fashioning an effort of 13.05 meters to take the bronze medal.
Â
"One of the things that I have preached to both teams is that it's very important to get off to a great start," Kraft added. "Both sites will provide us with quality competition this weekend."
Â
Up Next: East Carolina welcomes The Citadel, UNCW, Mount Olive, Winthrop and Virginia Tech to Minges Family Field at the Bate Foundation Track and Field Facility April 1-2 for the eighth annual Bill Carson Invitational.
