ECU Hosts Eighth Annual Bill Carson Invitational
March 31, 2022 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After opening its outdoor season last weekend, the East Carolina track and field program is set to play host to a handful of institutions for the eighth annual Bill Carson Invitational. The meet is scheduled to take place April 1-2 at Minges Family Field at the Bate Foundation Track and Field Facility.
Â
Competing Institutions: East Carolina, UNCW, Virginia Tech, The Citadel, Mount Olive and UNC Pembroke
Â
The Pirate women are vying for their fifth-straight team championship while the men look to claim the team title for the fifth time in their last six attempts. The meet was canceled in 2020 due to the emerging COVID-19 global pandemic.
Â
Last season, ECU defeated UNCW on both the men's and women's sides, racking up 27 combined event titles. The Pirates also set six facility records in the process.
Â
"We are very excited to host the Bill Carson Invitational this weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. This is always a very exciting time of the year. One of the things that I am most excited about hosting this meet, is the fact that the student athletes get to compete in front of their parents, professors and hometown crowd. It also gives us a chance to honor our seniors on this very important day. Our sport is rather unique in that we only host one home track meet each year. It's very important to me and the rest of the coaching staff that the kids compete very well at home and continue to build momentum into the rest of the outdoor season. Another favorable thing is the weather is supposed to be excellent this weekend. I would ask the people of Greenville to come out and support us."
Â
The squad split up last weekend, attending the Raleigh Relays and the Trojan Challenge at NC State and Mount Olive respectively. East Carolina won six event titles at the Trojan Challenge and set four program top-10 times and marks.
