
ECU Opens 2023 Dual Campaign At No. 2 North Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's tennis program faces a stern test to kickstart the 2023 dual match season as the Pirates travel to Chapel Hill Monday, Jan. 16, to face off with No. 2 North Carolina. The contest begins at 1 p.m. inside the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

ECU is under the direction of second-year head coach Kirstin Burgess who guided the squad to a 4-15 record in its first season back from a one-year hiatus. The Pirates picked up victories over Appalachian State, UNC Greensboro, Davidson and N.C. Central before falling to Houston in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championship.

East Carolina enjoyed a successful fall campaign during which every member of the squad recorded at least four victories. Sophomore Alisha Hussain notched an 8-2 record while teaming up with Ines Bachir to post seven doubles wins. Bachir also finished above .500 with a 6-5 mark. Isabella Rivera Ortiz (6-6), Anne Lou Champion (5-5) and Martina Muzzolon (5-5) ended up splitting each of their matches.

Freshman newcomer Kim Auerswald paired with Champion to capture six of seven doubles decisions as Auerswald also recorded five singles triumphs. In sum, the Pirates compiled a 43-41 singles record and a 23-18 doubles ledger.

North Carolina enters 2023 as the No. 2 team in the nation according to the initial Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. The Tar Heels put together a 28-3 overall record and 12-1 Atlantic Coast Conference mark, reached the semifinals of the AAC Tournament and fell to Texas in the NCAA Semifinals.

UNC boasts five ranked singles players on its roster – No. 1 Fiona Crawley, No. 5 Abby Forbes, No. 8 Carson Tanguilig, No. 18 Anika Yarlagadda, No. 48 Reilly Tran and No. 58 Elizabeth Scotty. The doubles teams feature No. 1 Crawley/Tanguilig and No. 16 Tanguilig/Tran.

The Tar Heels enter their season and home opener with Elon Friday with a 54-match winning streak at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

Following its match against North Carolina, ECU continues play Saturday, Jan. 21, with its own home opener against N.C. Central at the River Birch Tennis Center. The contest is scheduled to begin at Noon.
