After 35 years, East Carolina Athletics lost its Voice with the passing of Jeff Charles.
Â
Jeff and his Voice are synonymous with ECU Athletics and the Pirates. Please join me in prayer for his wife, Debby, son, Britt, and all his family and friends. Our focus is ensuring the family has the support they need through this challenging time.
Â
Jeff was a friend, mentor and colleague to so many. It has been touching to see the outpouring of admiration from current and past Pirate student-athletes, coaches and staff members who have built relationships with Jeff over the years. He was a gentleman and a true professional in every sense of the word.

Jeff had the gift of bringing Pirate games to life and connecting with listeners. His iconic "You can Paint this one Purple" will remain an important part of ECU Athletics history. His passion for the Pirates was second to none.

We will honor Jeff, his legacy, and his many contributions to ECU Athletics in the coming days, weeks and year. We will have a moment of silence pre-game and a special tribute of his most iconic calls at halftime of Wednesday's men's basketball game. It is only fitting that Wednesday evening will be a Paint it Purple game inside Minges Coliseum.

At the appropriate time, we will honor and celebrate Jeff for his impact of our community and ECU Athletics.

For now, let us focus on lifting up Jeff's family and friends.
