GREENVILLE, N.C. – No. 14 East Carolina closes out its home-and-home season series with Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon at Bud Matheny Ballpark in Norfolk.

First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the contest will stream live via ESPN+ while Scooter Rogers and Dr. Gary Overton will handle the radio broadcast on 94.3 The Game.

The Pirates defeated the Monarchs 7-3 back on April 11 in Greenville as Lane Hoover rapped out three hits, three runs scored and two RBI as well as clubbing his second home run of the campaign. Danny Beal was sensational in a relief appearance, going a career-long five innings with a personal-best nine strikeouts to notch his second save of the season.

ECU collected a road sweep of American Athletic Conference opponent Cincinnati last weekend, moving to within a half game of Houston for the league lead with six conference games left to play. The Pirates outscored the Bearcats 26-11 and batted .295 as a team while registering 13 extra base hits – including four triples. The pitching staff was excellent, limiting the home side to a .202 batting average and notching 27 strikeouts.

Justin Wilcoxen, who was tabbed to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll Monday, leads the East Carolina offense with a .345 batting average and is one of five Pirates hitting .303 or better. Jacob Starling is also coming on as of late as he checks in at .311 and paces the club in hits (56). Collectively, ECU is batting .287 with 91 doubles, 12 triples and 55 home runs as well as 224 walks drawn and 65 stolen bases.

On the mound, East Carolina ranks 16th nationally in earned run average (4.07) as well as fourth in WHIP (1.25), fifth in strikeout to walk ratio (3.17), 10th in walks allowed per nine innings (3.22), 19th in hits allowed per nine innings (8.01) and 24th in strikeouts per nine innings (10.2). The Pirate pitching staff has struck out double-digit batters in 24 games and owns 479 total strikeouts against 151 walks in 422.1 innings of work.

Old Dominion (30-17) won a Sun Belt Conference road series at Arkansas State last weekend and returns home where it sports an 18-9 record. The Monarchs are hitting .297 as a team with 98 doubles, 16 triples and 91 home runs. Hunter Fitz-Gerald tops the club with a .335 batting average, 67 hits, 66 RBI and 21 home runs. Old Dominion's pitching unit boasts a 4.99 ERA with 395 strikeouts and 198 walks in 415.0 frames.

The Old Dominion Series
Old Dominion leads the series with East Carolina 36-32, including a home-and-home season sweep of the Pirates in 2022 though both wins were by one run. ECU last won in Norfolk on April 24, 2019 when it picked up a 10-7 victory as part of an eight-game winning streak that season.

Lunsford-Shenkman Tabbed AAC Pitcher of the Week
Sophomore RHP Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman earned American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in career May 8 after throwing six perfect innings against North Carolina and Cincinnati. He backstopped the Pirates to a win in the series finale with the Bearcats, going a career-long five frames with three strikeouts as ECU knocked off Cincinnati 6-5 in 10 innings to sweep the set. An anchor of the Pirate bullpen, Lunsford-Shenkman leads the club in appearances (21) and earned run average (2.19) while opposing batters are hitting just .201 against him.
