GREENVILLE, N.C. – Colby Bortles, who joined the East Carolina baseball program in 2021 and most recently served as the team's volunteer assistant coach, has been promoted to the role of assistant coach and hitting coach according to an announcement Monday by head coach Cliff Godwin.
Â
Over the last three years, Bortles has been instrumental in helping the Pirates to 137 wins, two NCAA Regional titles, three consecutive NCAA Regional appearances, a pair of Super Regional berths, three American Athletic Conference regular season championships and the 2022 AAC Tournament crown.
Â
"I am very excited for the opportunity to promote Colby into a full-time assistant coaching position," Godwin said. "He will also take on an elevated role as our hitting coach. Colby did a great job with our hitters last year and we look forward seeing him flourish as our hitting coach!"
Â
During the recently completed 2023 campaign, ECU tallied a program single season second-best 47 victories as well as its fourth-straight American Conference regular season championship and an appearance in the NCAA Charlottesville Regional finals.
Â
With Bortles' assistance, the Pirates paced the league in on base percentage (.390), runs scored (486), hits (668), RBI (445), doubles (131), walks drawn (317), total bases (1,052), sacrifice flies (35) and sacrifice bunts (37) while slotting second in batting average (.292) and triples (14). Â
Before arriving in Greenville, Bortles was the volunteer assistant coach at Charleston Southern during the 2019 season. He jumped into the coaching ranks after three years in the Detroit Tigers organization (2017-19) as a 22nd-round selection in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft.
Â
A four-year letterman at Ole Miss from 2014-17, Bortles finished his career ranked 10th in program history with 153 RBI. He appeared in 213 games with 184 starts. He helped the Rebels tally 153 wins over a four-year period (64 in Southeastern Conference play) while appearing in three NCAA Regionals (2014-16) and the 2014 College World Series.
