Pirates Post 10 Event Wins at Camel City Invite
January 27, 2024 | Track & Field
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The East Carolina track & field program put together another successful outing on Friday and Saturday at the Camel City Invite at the JDL Fast Track. The Pirates earned 10 event wins and Carlmelo Martin and Shakiel Dacres moved their way into the program record book in the 60-meter dash and shot put, repespectively.
Â
It was the Pirate sprints group kicking things once again for an electric Friday evening. Rosalynd Hollingsworth and Martin led an ECU sweep of the 60m on the night. Hollingsworth came within a whisker of her PR in the event, missing it by just 0.02 seconds in victory with her 7.53 second result. Meanwhile, Martin, in just his second collegiate meet, ran a commanding 6.75-second 60m for the win, entering his name at No. 10 in program history in the event.
Â
The team kept it rolling with Makhia Jarrett taking the 200m with a time of 25.38 seconds while Hayley Whoolery bolstered the women's squad's success on the track with her 5,000m win in 17:35.32. It was a PR for Whoolery and a wire-to-wire win, well clear of the competition. Sydni McMillan also took the win in the 60m hurdles, just missing her PR set a week ago, running 8.30 in the preliminary round while the women's 4x400m team of Nyah Gore, Calandra Henry, McMillan and Melicia Mouzzon took the win to cap the day on Friday.
Â
The Pirate jumps crew held serve on their end, with Elizabeth Taylor and Skyler Harrelson going 1-2 in the long jump with leaps of 5.68m and 5.66m, respectively. On the men's side, Jared Harrell took second in the event, clearing 7.15m.
Â
The Pirates came out hot in the field events on Saturday with a sweep of the men's and women's shot put and a victory in the women's triple jump – to go with a 2-3 finish on the men's side.
Â
Naadiyah Faison started it off with her season debut in her signature event, winning the women's shot put by over a meter with a mark of 15.63m. Shakiel Dacres threw his way to a win in his second meet as a Pirate, hitting a mark of 16.57m to complete the sweep. Dacres launch also tied Logan Carroll's mark from 2023 for sixth in program history.
Â
In the triple jump L'Nya Carpenter used her second jump of the day to carry through for the win with a mark of 12.06m. On the men's side Nate Williams (14.65m) and Jared Harrell (14.55m) went 2-3 in the event with Williams missing the win by just a centimeter.

"We had another pretty good weekend considering everything," said Director of Track & Field Curt Kraft. "We left the meet today with numerous people getting numerous personal bests once again. Both teams competed with the same energy and excitement that we competed with last weekend. As long as we see some improvements in each and every event area, every weekend, it will add up at the end. Now we have to have another good week of practice and turn our attention to next weekend."
