Pirates Send Contingents to Virginia Tech and South Carolina
February 01, 2024 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina track & field program will send athletes to the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Invite and the South Carolina Invite on Friday and Saturday in Blacksburg, Va. and Columbia, S.C. respectively.
Â
The Pirates enter the weekend after a successful outing at the Camel City Invite last time out which saw ECU take home 10 event wins and two top-10 marks in program history. Those two marks came from a pair of newcomers with Carlmelo Martin taking the win in the 60m with a time of 6.75 seconds, good for 10th in ECU history, and Shakiel Dacres winning the shot put with a launch of 16.57m, tying him with Logan Carroll for sixth in program history.
Â
Dacres will be back in action in the shot put this week at Virginia Tech along with a plethora of other Pirate event winners and top-10 holders, including the ever-dominant Naadiya Faison in the women's shot put.
Â
Martin will also be back in action as he heads down to South Carolina along with Royal Burris for the 60m and 200m in Columbia. Melicia Mouzzon will also be back in action at South Carolina alongside Calandra Henry and Teliyah James in the 60m and 200m. Sydni McMillan and Terence Booth, Jr. will compete in the 60m hurdles as well.

"This is our third indoor meet of the indoor track season," said Director of Track & Field Curt Kraft. "This is about the time of the year when everyone should be starting to achieve some consistency with their marks. I have always told our teams, that you can't wait until the conference championships to achieve a personal best. They have to prove to us, and to themselves that they can achieve a high mark before they get to the conference championships. We will be splitting our teams this weekend. The split squads will be up against some stiff competition at both places. Just like the last two weekends, both teams continue to be excited and hungry to compete."
