
Nathan O’Neal Sets School Record; ECU Takes Second At Elon Phoenix Invitational

BURLINGTON N.C. – East Carolina senior Carter Busse finished tied for second (203/10-under) while sophomore Nathan O'Neal shot a program record-low round of 62 (32-30) placing fourth and helping the Pirates to a second-place team finish at the Elon Phoenix Invitational Tuesday.
East Carolina finished second in the event with a 12-under par score of 840 (281-281-280) finishing seven strokes behind UNC Greensboro (833/19-under). Host Elon (842/10-under) placed third ahead of Longwood (849/3-under) and Middle Tennessee State (853/1-over) rounding out the top five.
"Very impressive golf this week from Carter Busse, finishing tied for second," said ECU Director of Golf/Men's Head Coach Kevin Williams. "We witnessed an unbelievable final round from Nathan O'Neal! A lot of positives to take away from this week heading into our last tournament of the fall in Alabama the end of this month."
Busse shot rounds of 65, 67 and 71 to lead the Pirates overall. In addition to his record-breaking round, Nathan O'Neal posted career-bests in total finish (fourth) and low-58 score 204 and tied the school record for a round (relative to par) at 9-under, which was set in 2023 by Lucas Augustssson. On the day, O'Neal carded six birdies, two eagles, nine pars and one bogey.
Junior Philip Linberg Bondestad finished tied for 32nd in the event posting a score of 217 (4-over) with rounds of 73, 73 and 71. Senior Tyler DeChellis earned a share of 37th place carding rounds of 75, 69 and 74 for a 5-over par 218. Rounding out the Pirates five-man roster was sophomore Adam Lennermark who claimed a share of 62nd with a score of 222 (73-75-74) at 8-over. Playing as an individual, freshman Luke Mosley shot a 236 (23-over) for a share of 105th.
The Pirates will close out the fall portion of their schedule on Saturday, Oct. 26 when they participate in the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in Loxley, Ala. at the Steelwood Country Club.
