October 07, 2024 | Soccer
IRVING, Texas – East Carolina soccer's Maeve English and Lucy Fazackerley have each picked up American Athletic Conference Player of the Week recognition, the league announced Monday. The Goalkeeper of the Week nod is English's seventh of her career and Fazackerley's Defensive Player of the Week honor is her first and her third overall weekly award.
Â
The duo earned their honors after the Pirates' 1-0 win on the road against Tulsa on Thursday, the program's first outright win over the Golden Hurricane since the 2021 spring season.
Â
English earned her Goalkeeper of the Week recognition thanks to a four-save clean sheet, holding a potent Tulsa offensive in check. It was her 27th career clean sheet, moving her ever closer to the ECU career mark of 30 (Amber Campbell), and her sixth this season. English had twice previously been named to the league's weekly Honorable Mention list this season.
Â
Fazackerley was named Defensive Player of the Week after not only helping the Pirates to the shutout but also scoring the game-winning goal in the process. The goal was her first of the season and the fourth of her career. It was also her third career game winning goal. While this is Fazackerley's first Defensive Player of the Week nod, the sophomore was twice named Rookie of the Week last season.
The pair are the fifth and sixth Pirates to earn weekly honors this season with Kylie Alvarez, Sydney Schnell, Abby Sowa and Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram being recognized previously.
Â
English, Fazackerley and the Pirates will continue play carrying a two-game winning streak as they play host to an excellent South Florida side on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game is free to attend for fans.
