November 27, 2024 | Soccer
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay - East Carolina soccer's Juliana Viera has been called up to duty for the Uruguayan full National Team replacing Micaela Domínguez for a pair of international friendlies, the AUF, the nation's governing body for football, announced on Monday. The National Team selection is the first of the promising Montevideo native's career.
Viera will be making her debut on the 23-woman roster as Uruguay competes in friendlies against Chile and Argentina on Nov. 30 and Dec. 3, respectively. Both games will be taking place in Chile.
The 22-year-old has seven previous caps for the Uruguayan U-20 squad back in 2022 as she helped her home nation to third place at the Conmebol South American Cup U-20.
Viera, a junior for the Pirates, just wrapped up a stellar season as a defensive anchor on the program's first ever American Athletic Conference Tournament Champion squad. An All-Conference Third Team honoree, she appeared in 19 games games making 17 starts and tying for the team lead with four assists on the season. It was a breakout year for No. 7 who also notably scored the deciding penalty kick in the PK shootout victory over South Florida in the American Athletic Conference Semifinal Round.
Viera is the first active ECU player to make a full national team since Jayda Hylton-Pelaia represented Jamaica at the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru. Hylton-Pelaia made four starts in that international stint.
