GREENVILLE, N.C. – The third seeded East Carolina soccer team is set for a rematch with sixth seeded Charlotte in the American Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal on Monday at 11 a.m. in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
It's a contest of two bitter rivals both entering the game on winning streaks, one looking for revenge and one looking for assertion.
Last Time Out
The Pirates rose to the occasion for a 2-1 win over Rice on Thursday to claim the third seed in the American Tournament. Abby Sowa converted a penalty kick in the first half before Sierra Lowery struck gold with her perfect strike from distance for what was her second career goal. Rice got one goal back late but Maeve English's three saves were enough to get the win on a gorgeous Halloween night in Johnson Stadium
Scouting Charlotte
The 49ers, like the Pirates, enter the game on a good run of play with a pair of consecutive wins, 1-0 over both Rice and Temple. For them, the context is a bit different. Entering at 4-7-7, the 49ers have struggled to score at times this year with four scoreless draws, hampering their record despite eight shutotuts on the season. Macey Bader's five goals lead the offensive effort which has turned in just 13 goals while Emma Wakeman has been terrific playing every minute in goal with an impressive .782 save percentage and those eight shutouts.
Series History
The Pirates are looking for revenge against the 49ers who ended their season in 2023 with a 5-0 victory in the American Athletic Conference Tournament opening round. Charlotte has won two of the last three and stole a draw in the one meeting this season, a 2-2 stalemate in the Queen City. The Pirates last downed the 49ers in 2019, a 1-0 road victory with Cashlin Copley scoring the winner.
Weekly Honors
On Friday, Abby Sowa earned her second American Defensive Player of the Week recognition. It was the fifth honor of her career. Sierra Lowery joined her on the honor roll with an Honorable Mention nod.
Records to Break
Annabelle Abbott and Maeve English are both set to break the ECU program record for career appearances at 85 on Monday. The duo enters the game tied for the career mark with 84 games played. The record is currently held by Kim Sanford (2017-21). English is also set to break the ECU career goalkeeper minutes record, currently held by Amber Campbell (2005-008) with 7,690 minutes played. English has so far played 7,678, needing just 13 minutes on Monday to move into first all time.
Iron Woman
Abby Sowa has played in every game and not come off for a second since Oct. 17, 2021. She has played 5,250 consecutive minutes and has been on the pitch for all 1,530 minutes this season. That's two full seasons and 58 full games.
Alone at the Top
After nearly 16 years, there has been a change at the top of the ECU career starts list with Maeve English now claiming the top spot with now 84 starts in Purple and Gold.
