GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team returns to Minges Coliseum at 6 p.m. on Wednesday for a meeting with the VCU Rams. Single game tickets are still available for purchase and for those unable to attend, the game will be streaming on ESPN+ with Evan Budrovich and Brittany Hoyt on the call.
Last Time Out
The Pirates won an overtime thriller at Old Dominion on Sunday in which the team blew a 10-point lead before erasing a seven-point deficit in the final four minutes to force overtime. Amiya Joyner starred with 27 points, 17 rebounds and four assists. The junior not only made a pair of free throws to tie the game with 7.2 seconds remaining in regulation, she went on to score the game-winning basket with 5.9 seconds remaining in overtime.
Scouting VCU
The Rams enter the contest with an even 5-5 record after thumping Delaware State last time out. The teams actually have a pair of common opponents, both having lost to James Madison while VCU dropped a two-point game at Old Dominion back in November. The team is led offensively by a pair of terrific scorers in Mary-Anna Asare and Timaya Lewis-Eutsey who average 15.1 and 14.5 points per game apiece.
Series History
The Pirates and Rams have done battle 30 times since their first meeting in 1991 with a narrow 16-14 lead for ECU overall. It was VCU who got the better of the last matchup, though, a 55-50 ballgame in Richmond last season. Danae McNeal led the Pirates with 18 points while Joyner went for eight points, 11 rebounds and six steals in the loss.Â
On the Boards
The Pirates had 58 rebounds at Old Dominion on Sunday, the team's most since grabbing 61 boards on Feb. 12, 2006 in an overtime loss against UAB.
My Oh MyMy
Joyner had another big day with 27 points and 17 rebounds on Sunday. It was her 11th career 15-rebound game which ranks behind only Debbie Freeman and Rosie Thompson's 12 in program history. With 703 rebounds, Joyner has moved into the top 10 on the ECU career list, bumping Danielle Melvin out of her previous 10th spot (682 from 1996-2000). Her 107 blocks rank sixth all time, just five away from tying Jen Cox in fifth.Â
Weekly Recognition
Joyner was named Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 21.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 assists in two wins on the week.
