February 16, 2024 | Baseball
FORT WORTH, Texas – East Carolina senior infielder Jacob Starling is one of 52 players who have earned inclusion on the 2024 Bobby Bragan National Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List.
Â
The award, created by the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation, was open to nominations from all Division I baseball programs in the country. The BBNCSA is based on performance at the plate, academics, and personal integrity.
Â
Starling led East Carolina in runs scored (60), hits (75) and walks drawn (44) a season ago while pacing the American Athletic Conference and ranking 97th nationally in walks drawn. He also finished third in the league in runs scored as well as first in total plate appearances (299) and second in at bats (241).
Â
The Pirates' everyday second baseman batted .310 (26-for-84) in AAC play with 22 runs scored, four doubles, four home runs, 15 RBI, 14 walks drawn and five stolen bases. He went 8-for-25 (.320) in the conference tournament before posting a .278 batting average (5-for-18) in the NCAA Charlottesville Regional. Starling also topped the squad with 27 multi-hit games while also turning in 14 multi-RBI efforts - including a six-RBI explosion in ECU's 17-4 victory over Indiana at the Keith LeClair Classic.
Â
The winner of the BBNCSA will be announced in June and honored at a gala in the fall at the Fort Worth Club. Texas Tech's Hunter Hargrove won the initial BBNCSA in 2017. Dallas Baptist's Devlin Granberg took home the honor in 2018 with Texas Tech's Josh Jung winning the award in 2019. Connor Norby from East Carolina University won the BBNCSA in 2021 with Ivan Melendez from the University of Texas taking home the award in 2022. 2023's winner was LSU's outfielder Dylan Crews.
