200 Free Relay Team And Guzman Claim Gold At AAC Championships

DALLAS, Texas – East Carolina's 200 freestyle relay team and sophomore Frida Zuniga Guzman (3-meter dive) claimed top honors during the second day of the 2024 American Athletic Conference Championships Friday. The Pirates currently sit in fourth place with 179 points with two days remaining.
ECU's 200 freestyle relay team of Carlie Clements, Mikayla Durkin, Laura Kellberg and Heidi Bruining posted a time of 1:30.81 nearly a full second ahead of FIU (1:31.42) and almost two seconds in front Florida Atlantic (1:32.30).
Guzman had a huge day posting an AAC Championship meet and school record score of 352.80 in the 3-meter dive earning the Pirates 20 points in the A-Final. Sophomore Caitlin Irvine-Smith took second in the B-Final (tenth overall) with a score of 248.40 picking up seven points, while freshman Jecza took third in the B-Final (11th overall) posting a score of 246.15 for six points. Freshman Olivia Templeton (233.35/four points) and sophomore Averi Mcquitty (213.00/three points) placed 14th and 15th overall in the 3-meter dive.

Sophomore Emilee Hamblin claimed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle posting a time of 4:49.98 earning 15 points on the evening. In prelims, she swam a time of 4:49.78, which was a personal-best and an ECU top three all-time mark. Fellow classmate Sadie Covington posted a time of 4:51.80 taking sixth place in the 500-yard freestyle posting an ECU Top 10 all-time mark.
The meet continues Saturday, February 24, with swimming prelims at 11:30 a.m. ET/10:30 a.m. CT, diving prelims at 1:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. CT and finals at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
