Mouzzon Dashes to 60m Championship
Record-Breaking Mouzzon Dazzles at AAC Indoor Championships
February 24, 2024 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Five individuals earned All-Conference honors, led by 60m Champion Melicia Mouzzon to pace the East Carolina Track & Field program at the final day of the 2024 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday. The Pirates finished seventh with 47 points on the women's side and ninth with 31 points on the men's.
Â
Mouzzon continued a brilliant tear of running, breaking her own 60m and 200m records, both of which she previously took down on Friday as well. In the 60m, Mouzzon dropped her record down to 7.27 seconds to win her first career American Athletic Conference Championship. She followed the win up with a 23.38-second result in the 200m to finish second in yet another program record performance. The result took 0.09 seconds off of the record she had set not 24 hours prior.
Â
Mouzzon was not the only electric performer for ECU on the day, though, and much of it came from her fellow sprinters.
Â
Terence Booth, Jr. and Sydni McMillan both had strong days, posting All-Conference finishes finishing second each in the 60m hurdles. Booth finished with a time of 7.88 seconds to lower his PR and already-standing second time in program history. McMillan posted a solid run of 8.30 seconds to take silver.
Â
Royal Burris was also himself on Saturday, taking All-AAC honors in the 60m with a time of 6.75 seconds to take third. His teammate Carlmelo Martin finished close behind in fourth with a time of 6.77 seconds.
Â
Naadiya Faison brought it home with a third-place result in the shot put, defending her All-Conference performance from 2023 with a toss of 15.36m to take bronze.

Quotable
"Both teams competed their hearts out this weekend," said Director of Track & Field Curt Kraft. "All I asked of both teams as we went into this weekend was to compete with heart and passion. We had a lot of great things happen this weekend, individual conference champions, top-three finishers, and numerous personal bests. Anytime you are breaking school records and achieving individual conference champions, you have to feel very good about the direction that we are heading. Now we have to turn our attention to getting better and looking forward to a great outdoor season."
