GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team saw its six-game winning streak come to a halt on Wednesday as the Pirates fell to in-state foe NC State 11-2 in five innings at Max R. Joyner Stadium.
Â
The Pirates (16-2) were stymied at the plate for much of the game by the Wolfpack's Madison Inscoe while NC State's offense plated five runs in the third inning to pull away.
Â
After a quick first inning, the Wolfpack scored on a two RBI double in the top of the second before erupting with five runs on five hits in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead. The Pirates' three batters would each ground out in the bottom of the third and NC State would add two more runs to increase its lead to 9-0 in the fourth inning.
Â
ECU would get its first hit of the game on a Morgan Johnson single, but the Pirates would leave two runners on base and NC State would continue to add to its lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth.
Â
The Pirates would plate two runs on the final play of the game with a single from Anna Sawyer, but Emma Jackson was run down between second and third on the play to seal the run-rule loss.
Â
Jordan Hatch (7-2) surrendered five hits and four runs in two innings of work in the loss.
