March 19, 2024 | Baseball
ELON, N.C. – No. 10 East Carolina scored three early runs and received a solid start out of RHP Chris Kahler on the mound as the Pirates collected a 10-1 midweek victory over host Elon Tuesday afternoon at Latham Park.
ECU (15-4) extended its winning streak to eight games and cooled off a Phoenix (9-11) side that took two of three from Minnesota over the weekend. The Pirates out-hit the home team 10-3 and took advantage of a trio of Elon errors.
Carter Cunningham went 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI to stretch his hitting streak to 19 games while Justin Wilcoxen notched a pair of base knocks and scored two runs. Vince Fattore provided the only Elon offense with a solo home run.
Kahler (1-0) needed just 60 pitches to get through five innings, limiting the Phoenix to one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Itai Spinoza (0-2) took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits in just one frame.
Ryley Johnson kickstarted the offense from the jump, laying down the first pitch of the contest with a bunt and reaching first without a throw. A two-out single by Jacob Starling moved Johnson to third before Wilcoxen laced an RBI double to the wall in left to put the Pirates on the board. Following a Bristol Carter walk, Ryan McCrystal sent an 0-1 offering through the left side for a two-run single to leave ECU ahead 3-0.
After Kahler retired Elon in order in the home half of the first, Johnson and Cunningham reached in the top of the second on a hit by pitch and a single respectively. With one away and Johnson at third, Jacob Jenkins-Cowart grounded out to second base, allowing Johnson to trot home and make it a 4-0 contest.
The Phoenix broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with the Fattore long ball, but the Purple and Gold responded with a big four spot right away in the top of the sixth to pull in front 8-1. Carter led things off with a single up the middle and McCrystal reached on an error before Joey Berini laid down a bunt that drew a wide throw to first to load the bases with no outs. A walk, wild pitch, Cunningham run-scoring single and Jenkins-Cowart RBI on a double play accounted for the quartet of runs in the frame.
The Pirates put the finishing touches on the win in the top of the ninth with two more runs and Jackson DiLorenzo worked around a two-out single to complete the afternoon.
