Pirates Post High Marks at Raleigh Relays
March 30, 2024 | Track & Field
RALEIGH, N.C. – The East Carolina track & field program competed at the Raleigh Relays, Thursday through Saturday at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility at N.C. State. The Pirates posted two program records, a pair of event wins and several more top 10 marks.
Â
Naadiya Faison kicked the meet off with a bang on Thursday as she took third place in the women's shot put with an impressive throw of 15.98m. Faison has now thrown over 15 meters on 11 of her 12 attempts during the outdoor season – she had one foul on Thursday – in program history only four other athletes have done so even once.
Â
Friday was a big day for the Pirates with one program record and three other marks ranking in the top 10 in program history as well as another pair of podium finishes, including Starrett Vesper's victory in the pole vault.
Â
Vesper just missed out on a big personal record in the event but still managed a season best with his clearance of 4.85m. That effort was also good enough for the win in the event as he was the only athlete to go over 4.80m on the day.
Â
Rebekah Bergquist joined Vesper with a podium finish, taking third in the discus with her toss of 50.13m in very windy conditions. Only three athletes threw over 50 meters on the day with Bergquist posting her second straight meet with a 50-plus meter throw.
Â
In the jumps group, Faith Spencer had a career day in the triple jump as she bested her PR by over half a meter with a mark of 12.42m. That leap is good for fifth in program history and placed her fourth in the meet.
Â
On the track, Terence Booth, Jr. and Sydni McMillan kept up their phenomenal stretch of running, both with lifetime bests and top 10 marks. Booth posted a time of 14.13 seconds in the 110m hurdles which is good for ninth in ECU history while McMillan posted a remarkable time of 13.33 seconds in the 100m hurdles, though a tad wind aided, for the second-fastest time in program history. McMillan finished fourth in the meet while Booth took 12th.
Â
Alyssa Zack had the nightcap in the women's 10,000m where she took over 35 seconds off of her own program record with a time of 34:31.89, becoming the first runner in program record to break 35 minutes in the event.
Â
The Pirates had several competitors find success on Saturday but it was Melicia Mouzzon who made the headlines. As a member of the 4x100m team with Rosalynd Hollingsworth, Calandra Henry and McMillan, Mouzzon helped the relay to a tie for the seventh-fastest time in program history with their 45.16 second finish – good for second in the meet.
Â
Mouzzon wasn't done there, taking an individual win in the 200m and downing one more program record with a time of 23.20 seconds. The senior took down Tyshonda Hawkins' 10-year-old record of 23.29 and officially can be bestowed the title of Fastest Woman in Purple and Gold.
Â
Mouzzon now owns the East Carolina record at 60m indoors, 100m outdoors, 200m indoors and 200m outdoors. A run of dominance in the sprints unmatched in program history.
Â
Royal Burris joined Mouzzon in the sprints and held his own with a 21.08 second finish for fifth place overall in the meet.
