East Carolina Sweeps Weekly AAC Baseball Honors
April 15, 2024 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina swept the weekly American Athletic Conference baseball awards for the second time this season as junior outfielder Ryley Johnson and junior RHP Trey Yesavage were tabbed the Player and Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon.
Â
Johnson earned the accolade for the first time in his career while Yesavage garnered the award for the second-straight week. The duo is the second pair of Pirates to earn both laurels in the same week this year as Carter Cunningham and Zach Root were recognized back on Feb. 26 following ECU's series victory over then No. 15 North Carolina.
Â
In a five-game week, Johnson hit .533 (8-for-15) with eight runs scored, six RBI, two doubles, a triple, a home run and five walks while extending his on base streak to 33 as East Carolina knocked off Elon and Old Dominion in the midweek before picking up a series win over Charlotte. After posting a hit and two run scored in the wins over the Phoenix and Monarchs, he went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI in the run-rule win over the 49ers before notching three hits and two runs scored in the 5-1 victory that clinched the series Saturday. Johnson added three RBI and a run scored in the series finale.
Â
Yesavage was simply dominant in his Friday night start versus Charlotte, tossing six scoreless and hitless innings with a season-high 12 strikeouts and combining with Jackson DiLorenzo to throw the team's second no hitter in the span of three days. He retired 13-straight batters at one point in the contest and lowered his league-leading batting average against to .151. Yesavage currently paces the conference in strikeouts (86) and ranks ninth nationally in ERA (1.66).
Â
ECU returns to the field Tuesday (April 16) evening with a non-conference game at William & Mary. First pitch from Plumeri Park is scheduled for 6 p.m.
