April 29, 2024 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Carter Cunningham and Trey Yesavage have been named the American Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively according to an announcement by the league Monday afternoon.
Â
East Carolina has now swept the conference's weekly awards three times this season. Cunningham and Zach Root were both recognized back on Feb. 26 while Ryley Johnson and Yesavage took home the honors April 15.
Â
Cunningham hit a league-best .562 (9-for-16) with nine runs scored, 10 RBI, five walks, three doubles and three home runs for East Carolina's 4-0 week that included a home win over then No. 21 NC State as well as an AAC road series sweep at Memphis. He posted multiple hits in each contest while slugging 1.312 and producing a .667 on base percentage to account for a 1.979 OPS.
Â
The senior first baseman began the week going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, a double and a walk in the win over the nationally ranked Wolfpack as the Pirates swept NC State in a season home-and-home series for the first time since 2009. He then exploded at the plate in the Memphis series opener, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles, a home run and five RBI, before adding two hits, two runs scored and an RBI to his ledger in the middle game of the series. Cunningham polished off the weekend by going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI, two home runs and two walks as ECU swept the Tigers to maintain a two-game lead for first place in the conference standings.
Â
Yesavage helped lift the Pirates to a 14-0 run-rule win over Memphis in Friday's series opener, coming within one out of firing East Carolina's third no hitter of the season. He struck out 12 Tiger batters against two walks while limiting the home side to just a single hit, posting his sevent double-digit strikeout effort of the season in the process.
Â
ECU returns home this weekend (May 3-5) for a three-game American Athletic Conference series versus South Florida.
