Tulane Edges No. 6 East Carolina In Series Finale
May 12, 2024 | Baseball
The Pirates (37-13, 18-6 AAC) hold a one-game lead in the league standings over UTSA who travels to Florida Atlantic for its final regular season series while ECU hosts Rice.
Jacob Moore (5-3) grabbed the win in relief with a 3.2-inning outing, allowing two earned runs on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Jackson DiLorenzo (1-2) was saddled with the loss after surrendering the winning run in an inning of work.
Jackson Linn was the offensive hero for the Green Wave (29-23, 13-11 AAC), going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBI and two home runs. Ryan McCrystal and Jacob Jenkins-Cowart posted three hits apiece for the Pirates while also combining for six runs driven in.
Tulane took the early upper hand with a five-run bottom of the second, highlighted by a three-run blast off the bat of Colin Tuft. East Carolina responded right away with a two spot in the top of the third thanks to a McCrystal RBI single and subsequent Jenkins-Cowart RBI double.
Dixon Williams put the Pirates in business in the top of the fourth, leading off with a double to left before scoring on a Cam Clonch RBI groundout. Linn would stretch the home side's lead back to three with a leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the fourth.
ECU rallied all the way back to knot the score in the top of the fifth with a three spot. Cunningham led things off with a solo shot to left center before Jenkins-Cowart belted a two-run long ball off the scoreboard with one away to make it a 6-6 contest.
Gavin Schulz restored the Green Wave's advantage in the home half of the fifth with a leadoff solo home run while back-to-back doubles by Bristol Carter and Jenkins-Cowart forged another deadlock in the top of the seventh. East Carolina then grabbed a two-run advantage in the top of the eighth via a McCrystal RBI single and Jenkins-Cowart sacrifice fly, but Tulane took advantage of a throwing error with one out in the bottom of the frame as Linn connected on a 1-2 offering and cleared the wall in center for a two-out game-tying round tripper.
