July 15, 2024 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Texas – East Carolina junior outfielder Jacob Jenkins-Cowart was selected in the eighth round (244th overall) of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft Monday by the Miami Marlins. He represents the 24th Pirate draft pick under head coach Cliff Godwin.
A two-time All-American Athletic Conference First Team selection (2023 and 2024) as well as a Freshman All-America designee (2022), Jenkins-Cowart was one of three ECU players to start all 63 games as the Pirates' every day right fielder. He set the East Carolina and AAC single-season RBI records, driving in 79 runs to slot 10th nationally. Jenkins-Cowart also ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders in hits (32nd/90) and sacrifice flies (45th/6). He finished the season with a .340 batting average, 61 runs scored, 19 doubles, 13 home runs, 148 total bases, 21 walks and seven stolen bases while pacing the league in doubles.
Leading the club in both multiple-hit (28) and multiple-RBI (20) efforts, Jenkins-Cowart put together a 13-game hitting streak from March 22 to April 10 during which he hit .333 (17-for-51) with 14 runs scored, two doubles, a home run and 10 RBI. He also registered a team second-best 27 two-out RBI while driving in at least three runs in 13 contests and notching a hit in 51 of 63 games played.
Jenkins-Cowart ranks in the top five all time for ECU rookies in single-season games played, at bats, runs scored, hits, batting average, RBI, home runs, total bases and stolen bases. As a rookie in 2022, he helped the Pirates win both the AAC regular season and tournament championships and the NCAA Greenville Regional before taking part in the NCAA Greenville Super Regional versus Texas.
