ARLINGTON, Texas – East Carolina junior RHP Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman was taken in the 16th round (483rd overall) of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday by the Seattle Mariners. He represents the 27th Pirate draft pick under head coach Cliff Godwin.
Â
Lunsford-Shenkman is the fifth ECU player drafted in 2024, marking the most in a single season for the program since seven Pirates were selected in 2019.
Â
One of the most electric relievers in the nation, Lunsford-Shenkman garnered recognition as a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, a NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award finalist, a First Team All-America selection by Baseball America, a Second Team All-American by the NCBWA, an ABCA All-Atlantic Region Second Team honoree and an All-American Athletic Conference First Team designee.
Â
Lunsford-Shenkman finished the campaign with a 3-2 record, 1.55 earned run average, five saves and 79 strikeouts against 21 walks in 46.1 innings of work. Opposing batters hit just .218 off of him and he registered at least five strikeouts in seven outings – including a career-high eight in four scoreless innings versus Charlotte on April 13.
Â
As a freshman in 2022, Lunsford-Shenkman helped East Carolina win the AAC regular season and tournament titles and the NCAA Greenville Regional championship before making an appearance in game two of the NCAA Greenville Super Regional versus Texas.
