Schnell Earns American Offensive Player of the Week Recognition
September 30, 2024 | Soccer
IRVING, Texas - East Carolina soccer's Sydney Schnell has been named the American Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Schnell earned the honor after a three-goal week in games against Charlotte and North Texas last week. The graduate forward opened her week with a score in the first minute of the contest at Charlotte, taking a cross from Mackenzie Smith and finishing crossbar down from inside the eighteen.
Schnell followed that effort with a career day against UNT, striking from distance in the 26th minute with a curling shot that gave the Mean Green keeper no chance. Before scoring her second goal, she also helped to set up the team's second when her cross went into the hand of a UNT defender to draw a penalty kick which Abby Sowa finished. It became Schnell's first career brace—and the first by a Pirate in two years—in the 83rd minute when she settled a corner from Juliana Viera, took a calm touch in space and fired the ball by an approaching defender. The keeper got a glove to it but it was no matter as Schnell notched her sixth goal of the year and the 11th of her career.Â
The Offensive Player of the Week nod is Schnell's first. She had previously earned Honor Roll recognition.
Schnell and the Pirates return to action on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on the road at Tulsa.
