Pirates Remain Unbeaten with 0-0 Result Against Western Carolina
September 08, 2024 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. - For the first time in program history, the East Carolina soccer team remains unbeaten six games into the season as they battle to a 0-0 draw with Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon in Johnson Stadium. The Pirates put up a dozen shots with the Catamounts firing eight but both keepers were up to the task on the day.
As far as scoreless ties go, Sunday's contest was a beauty. The Pirates (3-0-3) largely dominated the possession but both teams looked confident and together with the ball at their feet, both sides finding moments to go on the front foot. The Catamounts (3-2-2) looked like a side fresh off of their 2023 SoCon title and put several challenging attempts on goal, particularly in the second half. Maeve English however, was playing in a different universe on the afternoon, making four saves including two stunners in the second half.
The first of English's highlight-worthy saves was a one-on-one stop against Isabella DeMarco in the 49th minute which the graduate keeper managed to get a stop to, similar to her last-second save against UNCW last time out. The second save was a dazzling, leaping effort to the upper right of the goal when DeMarco again fired a tantalizing shot in the 52nd minute.
On the other end, the Pirates had chances aplenty. The best of the bunch, though, was a double effort in the 58th minute when Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram got a strong head to the ball off of a corner. Her shot caromed firmly off of the crossbar and down a mere foot or so in front of the goal line. The ball went only as far as Abby Sowa who fired another header in on goal which Leanne Trudel was able to get her hands on and collect to end the danger.
The Pirates had another excellent, and surprising, opportunity in the 85th minute when Juliana Viera's corner was mishandled by Trudel and very nearly found its way into the net for an Olimpico but for the timely clearance of a Catamount defender. That play was reviewed, the first review for the Pirates on the year, and upheld as replay showed the ball clearly shy of crossing the line.
