Wichita, Kan. – The East Carolina men's basketball team is set to go on the road for its next two games, beginning on Saturday evening when the Pirates invade Charles Koch Arena to battle Wichita State for the first time this season.
The game is set to start at 7 p.m. ET and will be streamed on ESPN+ with Shane Dennis (play-by-play) and Bob Hull (analyst) on the call. Pirate fans can also tune in to 107.9 WNCT FM, 94.3 The Game or download the IBX app to hear Daron Vaught call the action.
The Pirates are led in scoring by All-AAC Preseason First Team guard RJ Felton's 18.2 points per game and the senior adds 7.1 rebounds per game. C.J. Walker supplies secondary scoring with 16.9 ppg and leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 per game while Jordan Riley averages 13.5 ppg and 5.7 rpg to round out ECU's double figure scorers. The quartet of Felton, Walker, Riley and Cam Hayes make up 76 percent of the Pirates' point production.
Last Time Out
RJ Felton scored a season-high 30 points, but East Carolina fell at home to North Texas, 69-60, on Tuesday evening inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. C.J. Walker added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the Pirates who only shot 4-for-10 at the free throw line on the night compared to the Mean Green's 76 percent (19-of-25).
What to Watch For
Cam Hayes is eight points away from reaching 1,000 points in his collegiate career. Hayes is averaging a career-best 9.5 points this season for the Pirates. RJ Felton is just four points away from moving to seventh all-time in scoring at East Carolina with 1,482 points entering Saturday.
Scouting the Shockers
Wichita State is coming off a 68-59 win at home over Charlotte to snap a three-game skid and pick up its first conference win of the season. Corey Washington led all scorers with 16 points and seven rebounds while Harlond Beverly and Xavier Bell added 12 and 10 points respectively. Xavier Bell is one of four Shockers averaging double figures in scoring with 14.6 points per game. Justin Hill (13.5 ppg), Corey Washington (13.2 ppg) and Quincy Ballard (10.7 ppg) round out Wichita State's top scorers. Ballard is also a double-double threat inside, adding 8.3 rebounds per game and he has four double-doubles on the season. Per KenPom, Shockers are one of the more experienced teams in the American, ranking third behind Memphis and North Texas.
Series History
Wichita State leads the all-time series with East Carolina 7-3 but the Pirates have had recent success in the series, sweeping the Shockers last season, 54-52 in Wichita and 68-55 in Greenville. ECU is also seeking to win at Charles Koch Arena for the third straight time on Saturday night which would be the first time the Pirates have won three straight games at an AAC opponent's arena.
