GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team has the second leg of a Pirate basketball double header on Saturday, taking on the South Florida Bulls for a 4 p.m. tip.
Tickets for the game are still available for purchase and for those unable the game will be available for streaming on ESPN+ with Evan Budrovich, Gabby Sartori and Matison Little on the call.
Last Time Out
The Pirates never led and trailed by as many as 25 in a loss to Temple on Wednesday. A 14 minute drought without a field goal across the second and third quarter doomed the team's chances at victory after trailing by only five points early on. Amiya Joyner had a solid day with 17 points and 11 rebounds but shooting just 16-61 from the field and 24 turnovers, the Pirates could not score nearly enough to keep pace in the contest.Â
Scouting South Florida
The Bulls carry a 12-8 record and a 5-2 clip in league play into Minges on Saturday after throttling Florida Atlantic in their last outing. There isn't a whole lot that is surprising about this year's Bulls squad. They've played an incredibly difficult schedule and fared well. Sammie Puisis leads the team with 15.1 points per game and is shooting the ball at a ridiculous rate, including .444 from three—and if Puisis isn't getting it done, they have a host of other talented players waiting including L'or Mputu and Carla Brito who both average nearly a double-double per game.Â
Series History
The Bulls control the all-time series history 15-6 and have won six straight in the Kim McNeill era. The Pirates twice made a game of it last season with Danae McNeal twice scoring 25 points against the Sunshine State opponent, but in both cases ECU came up just short of a signature win.Â
My Oh MyMy
With 17 points on Wednesday, Joyner is now just 17 shy of 1,000 career points. When she reaches the milestone, she will be the 26th thousand-point scorer in program history and just the second with 1,000Â points and 100-or-more blocks (Marcia Girven). Additionally, her 11 rebounds on Wednesday gave her 772 for her career which moves her into 20th in American Athletic Conference history in the category.
Weekly Recognition
Devin Hagemann was named Freshman of the Week by the American Athletic Conference for the second week in a row on Monday after scoring 16 points with six assists in the win at Charlotte and adding 10 more points in the game at Rice. Hagemann is the first ECU player to record back-to-back Freshman of the Week honors since Joyner who won the award four weeks in a for in February 2023.
