October 19, 2025 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. ā The East Carolina soccer team dropped a difficult 5-0 decision to the No. 6 Memphis Tigers on Sunday afternoon on Bill Clark Homes Field at Johnson Stadium.
The Tigers (13-0-2, 7-0-1 American) took the lead in the third minute when Elise Perron took advantage of an ECU (5-6-3, 3-3-1 American) miscue and drove into the 18-yard box where she found Ashley Henderson for an easy score in front of goal. It was the second time this season in which the Pirates have conceded a goal in the first five minutes and the fourth in which an opponent has scored in the first 10 minutes of play.
Memphis doubled their lead in the 14th minute when, following a corner kick, several attempts to shoot and clear by the combatant teams led to the ball landing at the feet of Ally Casey who powered the ball with pace into the top of the net for a 2-0 lead.
The third goal of the first half came when Ashley Henderson intercepted an ECU pass and created an offensive sequence for Memphis which resulted in three shots, two of which were saved, but the third and final attempt by Flavie Dube was put in the goal for a 3-0 halftime margin.
Senior goalkeeperĀ McKayla WetselĀ entered the game between the sticks for the Pirates after the half, making 5 saves in her first appearance as a Pirate.
Memphis scored again in the 61st minute on a gorgeous cross from Alex Mackay which set up Henderson for another relatively easy score on a header at the back post which she finished clinically.
The Tigers scored the game's final goal in the 84th minute with a strike from Mihiro Furuya who wove through the Pirate defense and scored from a tight angle along the right goal line.
Alyssa TuckerĀ recorded the Pirates' lone shot on goal of the game in the 87th minute but was denied by Memphis goalkeeper Abby Kudla.
