Last Time Out
The Pirates dropped their first road contest of the year to Liberty, 69-53. Anzhané Hutton led the Pirates with 13 points while grabbing six rebounds on 4-4 from the field. ECU did force 25 turnovers and erased a 14-point first-half deficit to take a brief lead in the second half, but a 23-2 run in the third quarter by Liberty spelled doom. The Pirates shot just 1-13 from the field during that run while suffering a scoring drought of seven minutes and 18 seconds. Conversely, Claudia Acin and Avery Mills combined to shoot 10-12 from behind the arc in the game in helping the Flames pull away. The loss dropped ECU to 20-37 all time in road openers.
Scouting Charleston Southern
The Buccaneers enter the game with an 0-2 record after losses to Jacksonville and Charleston Southern to open the season after a 14-16 mark a year ago. With the departure of leading scorer Catherine Alben who posted 16.6 points per game in 2024-25, it's a new look squad this year. Tyonna Bailey owns the highest output with 22 points in their opener while Asha Sra is averaging 14.5 points per game across the first two games and Alaina Nettles is averaging nearly a double-double with 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. As a team, it's a three-point been barrage to this point with 57 attempts from behind the arc in just two games played with 21 makes, resulting in almost 75 points per game. Conversely, the team is being outrebounded by 11 with a large turnover margin in two losses.
Series History
Tuesday will mark four seasons in a row with the Pirates and Buccaneers facing off after having only played once prior (2000). ECU leads the series 4-0 after an 81-56 win in Minges, where all four contests have been played, last season. Jayla Hearp led all scorers with 21 points in the game to go with seven rebounds and four steals while Taliyah Wyche contributed a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
ECU versus...
The Pirates are 49-11 all time against current members of the Big South and 8-2 in the Kim McNeill era (1-1 High Point; 3-0 Charleston Southern; 1-1 Gardner-Webb; 1-0 Longwood; 2-0 USC Upstate).
ECU is 40-30 all time against schools from the state of South Carolina and 6-2 in the McNeill era.
Around the American
The conference is 16-10 so far to start the season with five teams still undefeated at 2-0. Five teams will be in action on Tuesday, including marquee matchups of Temple at West Virginia and Rice at Houston. This week, Edyn Battle of South Florida and Toman Dora of Tulsa took home Player and Freshman of the Week recognitions.
At the Helm
2025-26 will be the Pirates' seventh under the tutelage of Kim McNeill. The program has an 88-93 record under her leadership with a real shot to move over .500 this season.
Reclaim
Each season the Pirates choose an important word, meaningful to the team, to put on the back of their practice jerseys. In 2025-26, the team chose the word "Reclaim", signifying the group's goals after a turbulent 2024-25 of returning to their roots as a defensive minded team, getting back to their standards as role models in the community and striving for excellence in the classroom.
