WICHITA, K.S. – East Carolina dropped a straight-set decision (11-25, 14-25, 19-25) to Wichita State on Friday evening at Charles Koch Arena. The Pirates (11-13, 3-10 American) struggled to find an offensive rhythm against a Shocker squad that has now won three straight and sits tied for fourth in the American Athletic Conference standings.Â
Set One: Wichita State 25, East Carolina 11
Wichita State came out firing to open the match, using a 7-1 run to establish early control. Despite kills from Aulie Huff and Taryn Gilreath, the Pirates couldn't slow down the Shockers' efficient offense, which hit .273 in the set. Wichita State took the opener 25-11.Â
Set Two: Wichita State 25, East Carolina 19
ECU bounced back with more consistency to start the second frame, taking an early 6-2 lead behind strong serving and back-to-back kills from Huff and Carlia Northcross. Wichita State responded with an 8-0 run fueled by multiple kills from Emerson Wilford and Maddie Wilson. Though Huff and Gilreath added kills late in the set, the Shockers maintained their advantage to win 25-19 and move ahead 2-0.Â
Set Three: Wichita State 25, East Carolina 14
The Pirates continued to fight in the third, keeping pace midway through thanks to steady defense from Elle Jackson and a balanced attack from Gilreath and Huff. However, a late surge from the Shockers, capped by back-to-back kills from Brooklyn Leggett, sealed the match 25-14.Â
Huff led East Carolina with 11Â kills, while Gilreath and Northcross adding four. Jackson, Gilreath and Allison Butrum anchored the back row with 10Â digs each.
The Pirates now head to Oklahoma to face Tulsa on November 9.
