Cold Shooting Third Quarter Dooms ECU in 69-53 Loss at Liberty
November 07, 2025 | Women's Basketball
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The East Carolina women's basketball team saw a cold-shooting start to the second half doom their chances of victory in a 69-53 loss against the Liberty Flames on the road on Friday afternoon.
The Pirates (1-1) trailed by as many as 14 in the first half, but stormed back with a pair of runs at 13-2 and 9-0 run across the second and beginning of the third quarters to take a lead at 35-34. It was the team's lone lead after 3-0 to begin the game.
From there, it was the hot shooting of Liberty (2-0) paired with a cold spell for ECU that told the story. The Flames went on a 23-2 run to turn a one-point deficit into a 20-point lead as the Pirates suffered a nightmarish scoring drought of seven minutes and 18 seconds. All told, it was a 23-6 third quarter which spelled doom for the visitors.
Liberty got their scoring from some hot hands as Avery Mills led the way with 21 points on 5-7 from three. Claudia Acin hit all five of her three-point attempts. A combined 10-12 from behind the arc for the duo represented all of Liberty's makes from three-point range but it was all they needed. Mills also led the team with 10 rebounds for her double-double while star forward Emmy Stout posted 17 points with four boards.
The Pirates leveled things out with a 14-12 fourth quarter but the damage had been done. Anzhané Hutton led the team in scoring and rebounding in the end with 13 points and six rebounds and a perfect 4-4 from the field. Savannah Brooks (11) and Kennedy Fauntleroy (10) were the only other Pirates scoring in double figures.
