GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team goes back out on the road on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. ET contest with the UTSA Roadrunners in San Antonio, Texas. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+ with Karl Schoening, Carlie Heniman and Maria Trivelpiece on the call for what has been designated an American Hoops Showcase game by the conference.
The game will be a chance for revenge for UTSA after the Pirates knocked them out of the AAC Tournament in the Semifinal Round last season.
Last Time Out
The Pirates won their second straight with a nine-point victory over Tulsa at home on Saturday. It was a well-rounded team effort with six player scoring eight-or-more points and the team compiling 20 total assists. Amiya Joyner paced the group with 21 points on 7-10 shooting while Anzhané Hutton flirted with a double-double with 12 points and eight assists. The Pirates led for over 30 minutes of game time and were up by as many as 17 points in an impressive victory over the Golden Hurricane.
Scouting UTSA
The Roadrunners have been the class of the conference this season with a 20-3 overall record and a near-perfect 11-1 mark in league play, their lone loss coming in a road contest at South Florida. The team is led by Jordyn Jenkins who has asserted herself as a clear favorite for AAC Player of the Year with 18.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while torching the nets for 47 percent from the field and better than 80 percent from the foul line. Two other UTSA players—Sydney Love and Nina De Leon Negron—score in double figures with 10.3 and 10.1 per.
Series History
The Pirates and Roadrunners have a very short history with two of the three meetings in the series coming last season, both ECU wins for a 2-1 all-time edge. The lone prior contest came in 2014. The Pirates came out on top in the AAC Semifinal last season, 55-54. Joyner posted 15 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and four steals in the game as ECU erased a nine-point deficit with under five minutes remaining. Danae McNeal hit the game-winning basket with 39 seconds remaining to cap the comeback.
Weekly Honors
Joyner and Devin Hagemann swept the AAC's Player and Freshman of the Week honors on Monday. Joyner averaged 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in two wins last week while Hagemann posted 10.0 points and 6.5 assists per game. It is the first sweep for the Pirates since McNeal and Joyner took both recognitions on Feb. 27, 2023.Â
Court Vision
With eight assists against Tulsa, Hagemann now has 25 helpers in the last four games, the most in a four-game stretch for an ECU player since Alex Frazier had 26 from Dec. 20, 2017 to Jan. 3, 2018.
