GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team continues their run in the Sunshine State as they take on the South Florida Bulls at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+ with Jim Louk and Leah Secondo on the call.
March madness begins on Saturday as the calendar flips over to the third month of the year. It's a time of the year which has been a thrill for the Pirates the last two seasons. The team has made consecutive runs to the American Athletic Conference title game, winning the championship in 2023 before coming up just short last season.
Last Time Out
The Pirates got out to a massive first half lead and used it to earn a much needed road win at Florida Atlantic on Wednesday. The Owls made a mighty run at it, getting within five in the second half, but it was too little too late. MyMy Joyner posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the game while Khia Miller led the charge scoring with her 18 points. As a team, the Pirates shot over 50 percent from the field for the first time since the win over Charlotte on Jan. 15.
Scouting South Florida
The Bulls enter the game with a record of 20-9 and a mark of 13-3 in league play after a surprising defeat at Tulsa on Wednesday. Two games back from the conference lead, the Bulls have been excellent as has become the norm throughout the year. Sammie Puisis continues to lead the team offensively with her 15.3 points per game to pace five South Florida players over seven points per game. Carla Brito leads the way rebounding with 8.0 to go with her 8.9 points per game.
Series History
The Pirates nearly earned a monumental victory when the teams met in Minges earlier this season, leading for more than 30 minutes of game time and as many as 10 in the fourth quarter before South Florida roared back for a last second-win, capped by Vittoria Blasigh's game-winning basket with just a second remaining. The Bulls own the overall series 16-6 going back to 1985.
Weekly Honors
For her efforts against North Texas, Joyner was named to the American Athletic Conference's Weekly Honorable Mention list. The junior posted 19 points and 20 rebounds in the game. It was her second career 20-rebound game, making her the third player in program history to record multiple 20-board efforts.
