East Carolina Drops Conway Regional Winner’s Bracket Game to Host Coastal Carolina

The Pirates (34-26) now face an elimination game on Sunday at 1 p.m. against regional No. 2 seed Florida. The Chanticleers posted their 20th-straight win to improve to 50-11 overall.
Sebastian Alexander and Colby Thorndyke paced the home side with four hits apiece while also combining for 10 RBI. Jack Herring led the ECU lineup with a four-hit performance, complemented by three-hit efforts from both Dixon Williams and Austin Irby.
Matthew Potok (3-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing three runs on six hits with a strikeout in 2.2 innings. Brad Pruett (5-6) was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on two hits with no walks or strikeouts in 0.0 frames.
Thorndyke posted the first run of the contest on a solo shot in the second inning, but the Pirates grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Williams singled to lead off the half inning, moved to second on a John Collins sacrifice bunt and reached third via a Ryley Johnson infield single. Colby Wallace then put a ball in play that plated Williams and Irby slapped an RBI double off the right field wall to score Johnson and put East Carolina in front 2-1.
The teams matched each other with three runs in the fifth and sixth frames to leave the Pirates ahead 5-4. However, two home runs – including a Thorndyke grand slam – proved decisive as Coastal Carolina pulled away in the final few innings.
