
Pirates Drop Five-Setter To Kansas State

Chapel Hill, N.C. – Sydney Buchanan and Ellie Pate each had 14 kills but East Carolina surrendered a 2-1 lead and ultimately fell in five sets (20-25, 25-21, 25-15, 22-25, 10-15) to Kansas State on Saturday evening at Carmichael Arena.
Carlia Northcross and Kai Bailey had six and five total blocks respectively for the Pirates (8-2) who played their third straight five-setter. ECU outhit Kansas State (7-1) .235 to .225 but lost the battle in kills 66 to 54.
After a 3-3 tie in the opening stages of the first set, Kansas State used a 12-6 run to take a 15-9 advantage going into the media timeout of the set. The Pirates closed within two points after back-to-back Wildcats' errors made the score 21-19 but after using a timeout, Kansas State closed the set on a 4-1 run.
The second set featured 11 ties and two lead changes with the Pirates claiming the set with a 4-1 run of their own to even things up.
ECU dominated the third set, leading by as much as eight before closing the set with a 10-point win to take a 2-1 edge in the match.
Both teams battled in a fourth set that had 15 ties and 10 lead changes but ECU could not capitalize on a late 22-21 lead as the Wildcats rolled off four straight points to send the match to a fifth set.
After a kill from Aulie Huff tied the match at 8-8 in the fifth set, Kansas State took the lead for good on back-to-back kills and held off the Pirates to complete the comeback.
