Pirates Rout Tulsa, 79-48
January 13, 2026 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Fans who made the trip out to Minges Coliseum on Tuesday night were in for a treat as the East Carolina women's basketball team walloped the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 79-48, for the program's largest blowout victory in American Conference play since January 10, 2015. Four players scored in double figures and senior guard Kennedy Fauntleroy flirted with a triple-double in the romp.
Â
In many respects, Tuesday night was a vintage Kim McNeill era ECU win. The Pirates (12-6, 4-1 American) held an opponent under 50 points for the 23rd time since the 2019-20 season and turned Tulsa (11-5, 3-1 American) over 23 times.
Â
On the other hand, the Pirates displayed an uncommonly electric offensive output. The team hit 11 three-point shots, matching a season high, while out shooting what was the 19th best three-point shooting team in America from behind the arc, 40.7 percent (11-27) to 30.0 percent (6-20).
Â
The game followed an eerily similar script to Saturday's win over Wichita State. The Pirates got out of the gate hot, taking a 16-2 lead in the early going, and largely never looked back. Like the win over the Shockers, the Golden Hurricane only got back within single digits once on Tuesday night, getting as close as seven at the end of the first quarter.
Â
Minges came alive in those early minutes as the Pirates seemed like they could not miss. In particular, senior guard Savannah Brooks looked simply unguardable, drilling three consecutive threes in the early going and forcing a Tulsa timeout. Those triples, all before the first media timeout, already matched a season high for Brooks. She would go on to make one more, finishing 4-5 from deep and 7-10 from the field in a season-high 19-point outing. Brooks also blocked a pair of shots and took two charges in the game.
Â
When ECU again started the second quarter on an 11-2 run, the game was just about over. The team would lead by as many as 17 in the first 20 minutes of play and took a 10-point margin into the half. Tulsa, a team which entered Tuesday at 337th in the NCAA in turnovers per game, gave the ball away 15 times in the first half alone.
Â
The Pirates got out fast in the third and fourth quarters as well, with starts of 9-1 and 11-2, respectively. The efforts in the third were punctuated by a buzzer-beating jumper from Fauntleroy to push the margin to 19. With the quick start to the fourth and the lead pushing 30, the game was long over.
Â
In that fourth-quarter run, graduate forward Anzhané Hutton, who was honored for her 1,000th career point in a pregame ceremony, knocked down her second three of the game, marking two games in a row, and now three games on the season, with multiple threes. Hutton finished the game with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Â
Tuesday also marked the second time this season (High Point) in which Hutton and senior forward Keanna Rembert both hit three-point shots. Rembert went for 16 points and three blocks on in the game.
Â
When Fauntleroy, who did a little bit—or a lot, to be more accurate—of everything on Tuesday, hit a three with 1:36 remaining to put the Pirates up by 32, it was the largest lead for the team in any game in over a year. Fauntleroy was a force to be reckoned with in the game, finishing with 21 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals. All team highs or tied for team highs.
Â
In a game billed as the one to watch in the conference, with the American's top two scoring offenses—Tulsa entered at 73.7 and ECU at 73.0 per game—became as far from a vintage slug-it-out league match as imaginable. The Golden Hurricane's 48 points were the team's lowest scoring output of the season and the team was held to just eight points in the fourth quarter.
Â
The Pirates led for 38 minutes and 56 seconds in the game and have now led for 77 minutes and 56 seconds in the last two games, never trailing. ECU scored 30 points off of turnovers and 32 points in the paint while keeping Tulsa star Mady Cartwright in check with a 1-15 shooting effort from the floor and only seven points. Tulsa did not have a double-digit scorer in the game.
