GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team will hunt a bounce back victory in a rivalry meeting with the Charlotte 49ers in Halton Arena on Friday at 3 p.m.
Originally scheduled for Sunday, the contest was moved up due to the forecast winter storm. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
The Pirates dropped a frustrating contest with Wichita State on Tuesday, 63-54. The team trailed throughout but managed to work back into the lead in the fourth quarter before seeing a 51-51 tie with 8:22 remaining turn into a 12-point deficit before finally scoring again with just eight seconds left. All told, ECU missed 11 consecutive field goals down the stretch. The team was led by Kennedy Fauntleroy's 13 points and seven assists.
Scouting Charlotte
The 49ers enter the game with a 9-12 record and a 3-5 clip in American Conference play following a pair of close road losses at Temple and South Florida by a combined seven points. The team is led by Princess Anderson's 14.3 points on the season while Tanajah Hayes and Zoe Best both average double figures scoring as well. As a team, the strength is rebounding, entering Friday as one of the best teams in the country on the glass, at is sixth in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game with 17.6. The team is top 60 nationally in total rebounds per game as well.
Series History
The Pirates and 49ers have met 40 times going back to 1983 with a 26-14 edge to Charlotte all time. ECU has won the last four games in the series, however, including a 63-45 result in Minges Coliseum last February. Amiya Joyner led ECU with a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds in the game as six Pirates scored more than five points. Charlotte was led by, of all players, Keanna Rembert with 17 points.
ECU versus...
ECU is 83-109 all time in American Conference regular season play and 41-57 in the McNeill era. ECU is 121-150 all time in games against current members of the American Conference.
ECU is 223-150 all time against schools from the state of North Carolina and 17-10 in the McNeill era
Wichita State Game Notables
- Kennedy Fauntleroy totaled seven assists, her seventh game with 7+ this season. She is up to 99 assists on the year.
- Keanna Rembert made a three for the 13th time this season. She has made a three in five-straight games now.
- Four players made a three in the game, the 10th time with 4+ players making a three this season.
- From 8:22 to :08 in the fourth quarter, ECU did not score, missing 11 straight shots.
- ECU moved to just 2-7 when scoring under 70 points in a game.
- ECU shot just .611 (11-18) from the foul line in the game, just over the team's season low of .600 which was the UAB game on Saturday.
- ECU made fewer than 20 field goals for the third time this season (Liberty, UTSA).
- ECU blocked six shots, the 10th game with five-or-more this season.
- ECU only had four second chance points, the second worst outing of the season (3 vs. Elon).
- ECU assisted on 15 of 19 made field goals, the 16th game this season with assists on 50-percent-or-more of made field goals.
Win Streaks
The loss to Wichita State snaps the Pirates win streak at five, one shy of their season high. Still, with perspective, this is the first time with multiple win streaks of five-or-more games in a single season for ECU since 2014-15 (that team also had separate streaks of five and six).
Improved Shooting
Through 22 games, the Pirates have hit 131 combined threes. Five players have made 15+ threes so far—Kennedy Fauntleroy, Taylor Barner, Jayla Hearp and Keanna Rembert. Anzhané Hutton is just behind with 13. In the last decade, the Pirates have only made more threes in a full season twice (2023-24 and 2016-17).
It is the first time having five players with 15+ made threes since 2013-14 and the first time even having five players with 10+ since 2018-19. ECU has NEVER had six players with 15+ made threes.
Pick Your Poison
The Pirates have six players scoring over nine points per game this season: Fauntleroy (12.7), Barner (12.0), Rembert (10.5), Hutton (10.0), Hearp (9.4), Brooks (9.4).
According to available records, ECU has only had four players average in double figures six times: 1992-93, 1991-92, 1985-86, 1984-85, 1980-81, 1978-79. The program has never had five players average in double figures for a full season.
At the Helm
2025-26 is the Pirates' seventh under the tutelage of Kim McNeill. The program has a 102-99 record under her leadership.
Reclaim
Each season the Pirates choose an important word, meaningful to the team, to put on the back of their practice jerseys. In 2025-26, the team chose the word "Reclaim", signifying the group's goals after a turbulent 2024-25 of returning to their roots as a defensive minded team, getting back to their standards as role models in the community and striving for excellence in the classroom.
