Pirates Knock Off VCU, 4-3

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's tennis team earned a season-opening 4-3 win over VCU on Saturday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.

The Pirates took the doubles point thanks to a pair of 6-2 decisions by the tandems of Kim Auerswald/Reese Calvo and Skylar Moody/Ivona Savekova.

In singles play, three Pirates were victorious on the day. Kim Auerswald defeated Miriam Ibrahim Mohamma Metwally (6-1, 6-4) and Joan Madi won over Sara Alba Verastegui (6-3, 4-6, 7-5). Xenia Jeromin came away with the decisive point with the two teams knotted at three, defeating Elicia Kim (7-6, 6-7, 6-4).

With the win, the Pirates begin 1-0 for the first time since 2013 when the team opened with a 4-3 victory over App State. It is the program's first win over VCU since April 6, 2023, also 4-3.
