Pirates' Final Game Against No.10 UNC Cut Short Due to Weather
February 22, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The series finale between East Carolina Pirates baseball and North Carolina Tar Heels baseball ended in a 3–3 tie Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium after inclement weather forced the game to be called after playing five full innings.
With steady rain moving into the area and worsening field conditions, the contest concluded after a decision by both coaching staff for player safety and concerns. The game will not be rescheduled.
This is the first tie due to inclement weather since May 2016, when the Pirates had to call a tie against Cincinnati, ending the contest after eight innings, and, coincidentally, keeping the score 3-3.
Before the premature halt, East Carolina (3-4-1) struck first with a run in the third before adding two more in the fifth to take a 3–1 lead. North Carolina (6-1-1) responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own to tie the game before the weather ultimately ended the afternoon early.
The Pirates tallied six hits in the shortened contest while holding the Tar Heels to five going into the sixth inning, with a rain delay following immediately after. The delay was able to last a little over two hours before ultimately calling the game.
East Carolina will be heading to their second neutral site game of the season on Wednesday, to take on College of Charleston in Fayetteville.
