GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina volleyball battled through five sets against ETSU on Saturday afternoon, ultimately falling to the Bucs, 3-2, at Reynolds Gym.
The Pirates dropped the opening set, 25-18, but responded with a dominant second frame. ECU hit .519 as a team with 15 kills and just one attack error, cruising to a 25-12 victory to even the match at one set apiece.
ECU continued its strong play in the third set, posting 12 kills while hitting .300. The Pirates held ETSU to a .194 hitting percentage and closed out the frame, 25-19, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
ETSU answered in the fourth set, forcing a decisive fifth frame with a 25-14 victory. The Pirates were held to a .000 hitting percentage in the set as ETSU evened the match at two sets apiece.
In the fifth, ECU battled to keep pace but fell, 15-9, as ETSU secured the win.
Ellie Pate led the Pirates offensively with 17 kills, while Kai Bailey added 12 kills and hit .409 for the match. Angeles Alderete contributed nine kills while hitting .292, and Ekwe Anwah finished with five kills on 10 attacks while hitting .500.
Brook Watkins directed the ECU offense with 43 assists and added eight digs. Pate led the Pirates defensively with 24 digs, while Brooklyn Allison recorded 11 digs. ECU finished the afternoon with 50 kills, 48 assists, 77 digs and eight total blocks.
The Pirates return to action against Georgia Southern on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET.
