GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina Pirates opened their No Quarter Invitational dramatically, sweeping the Old Dominion Monarchs Friday evening at Minges Coliseum. In three sets, the match totaled 28 tied scores and seven lead changes.

SET ONE: OLD DOMINION 25, EAST CAROLINA 27
In the first competitive back-and-forth of the night, the Pirates started in a deficit after a Monarchs kill to open 1-0.

Angeles Alderete contributed two aces to build a lead slowly, but the Monarchs stayed close behind, taking advantage of three straight attack errors by the Pirates to change the lead again.

The Pirates kept gaining momentum after going point-for-point with ODU until the very end, 25-25; Taryn Gilreath forced a kill to tie it up, and Nina Edwards took the lead for the Pirates with her second kill of the set. With a final attack error on ODU, the Pirates take the first set, 27-25.

Pirates hit for .214 in set one, a little low compared to ODU's .289, and the Monarchs landed one more successful kill than ECU, 16-15. Edwards reached two kills with a .667 hitting percentage, while Kai Bailey placed three kills with over a .300 hitting percentage on the set.

SET TWO: OLD DOMINION 12, EAST CAROLINA 25
The Pirates broke wide open in set two. With Brooklyn Allison's service success, ECU started and held their lead until the end of the set.

Keeping the Monarchs to a low score, Bailey shone on defense with one block solo and two block assists, and the team totaled 4.0 blocks on the set.

Four Pirates hit over .500 on the set, with only three total errors, compared to ODU's 12 total errors.

The Monarchs ended set two with negative luck, landing a –.030 hitting percentage, with only eight kills and nine attack errors.

The Pirates nearly doubled their first-set hitting percentage, finishing set two with an impressive .448. The Pirates totaled 19.0 points with Edwards and Gilreath both having three kills.

SET THREE: OLD DOMINION 19, EAST CAROLINA 25
In the final, competitive third set, the Pirates started with an advantage: a kill from Alderete and an attack error by the Monarchs to take the lead 2-0.

The Pirates and the Monarchs kept trading at the line for service, when finally, the Pirates broke through for good, tying on a service error, and with a Kill from Ellie Pate, started a 7-0 point run that started momentum for the Pirates to solidify their sweep and their sixth win of the season.

Pate totaled seven kills in the set, with Bailey having three block assists.

ECU closed out the match with a .284 hitting percentage. Bailey anchored the defense with six total blocks (one solo), and Aulie Huff and Alderete each had two block assists.

Offensively, Pate grabbed 14 kills, with four other Pirates sharing the load, all with over five kills. Gilreath, back from injury, totaled five kills, 27 assists, and seven digs on the night. The Pirates totaled 55.0 points, with Alderete and Pate scoring double digits (10.0 and 14.0, respectively).

The Pirates hope to carry their momentum from Thursday night into Friday's match against Big Ten opponent Maryland. The Terrapins are currently on a seven-game win streak, and ECU hopes to start a win streak of its own. The match is set for Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
