Â
Loesner's coaching career began in 1995 as an assistant coach at Pitt Community College, where he played a key role in launching the baseball program. He worked as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator as well as the director of offseason skills and conditioning program, helping guide the team to the 1997 Region 10 regular-season title and Region 10 tournament championships in 1999 and 2000. Many players continued their playing careers at four-year universities and professionally including former Major Leaguer Freddie Bynum and former All American Pirate closer Cory Scott.
Â
In the fall of 2000, Loesner joined Keith LeClair’s staff at East Carolina University as the Director of Baseball Operations and was quickly promoted to assistant coach the following year. He worked with outfielders, coached first base and assisted with hitting. During his tenure (2000-2003), ECU set a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) record for wins, hosted a Super Regional as the No. 7 national seed in 2001 and won the Conference USA tournament in 2002 - earning a No. 2 regional seed at Clemson. The 2001 ECU team is widely regarded as one of the best in the program’s history. Team members Chad Tracy, John Williamson and Sam Narron are enshrined in the East Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.
Â
Loesner became the head baseball coach at Kinston High School in 2003, overseeing all aspects of the program. During his tenure, Kinston produced its first MLB draft selection (Ben Lanier Devil Rays) and produced several collegiate-level players. In 2008, he took over as head coach at Northern Nash High School in Rocky Mount - leading the team to a conference championship and 3A state sectional title while earning Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2009. Several of his players moved on to four-year programs - including former Pirate Tyler Joyner who was drafted by the Cleveland Indians.
Â
Beyond the high school and college realm, Loesner has evaluated talent as an associate scout for the Chicago Cubs (1998-2000) He also served as assistant coach for the Cubs East Coast Professional Baseball Showcase Team. Some notable members of those teams were Major League standouts David Wright, Justin Verlander, BJ Upton and Rocco Baldelli. Additionally, Loesner put in time as the pitching coach for the Falmouth Commodores in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League from 2001-02 with David Aardsma, Pat Misch and Steven Jackson going on to pitch in the major leaguers.
Loesner, a Secaucus, N.J. native, started his playing career at Brookdale Community College in New Jersey. As a team captain, he paced the squad to a regional championship and a third-place finish at the NJCAA World Series in 1993. Loesner later transferred to East Carolina University where he played during the 1994 and 1995 seasons as a catcher while completing a bachelor’s in psychology. He also holds a master’s in athletic administration from ECU. Loesner resides in Winterville and is the proud parent of two daughters Taylor (16) and Kate (12).
