Hunter Allen, who returned to ECU in December of 2017 after being named the Pirates’ Volunteer Assistant Coach, is in his third year as a member of head coach Cliff Godwin’s staff.
A two-year letterwinner for the Pirates, Allen works directly with the outfielders while also assisting with the hitters, base running and infield play. He also coordinates all of ECU’s summer, fall and winter camps.
Allen tutored an outfield in 2018 that sported a .986 fielding percentage where they committed just five errors, tallied 11 outfield assists in 366 chances, posted a 44-18 overall record, claimed the AAC Tournament Title and hosted the NCAA Greenville Regional as the No. 12 national seed. Sophomore Bryant Packard was named to a program-best seven All-America teams after batting .406 (sixth in the nation, second in Division I) with 14 home runs and 50 RBI to claim the teams batting triple crown.
Senior Andrew Henrickson posted a 1.000 fielding percentage while hitting at a .291 clip with nine extra base hits and 33 runs scored. He earned AAC All-Tournament honors after batting .429 with a team-high seven RBI and six runs scored. Junior Dwanya Williams-Sutton, who garnered second-team all-league accolades and was a fifth round draft pick by the San Diego Padres, batted .331 with seven home runs, 21 RBI, 39 runs scored and swiped 18 of 20 bases.
Allen returned to ECU after spending eight months as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Brunswick Community College. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach and infield instructor at Louisburg College helping the Hurricanes to a 26-24 overall record in his first year as a full-time coach. Under Allen’s assistance, the Hurricane offense ranked among the league leaders in home runs (55/third), batting average (fourth) and runs (338/fourth), while sporting a .951 fielding percentage.
Serving as a student coach under Godwin in 2016, Allen helped direct a club that posted a 38-23 overall record, claimed the 2016 Charlottesville Regional crown and came one win away from making its first appearance in the College World Series.
During his career, Allen started 93 of 104 games for the Pirates boasting a .334 average with 109 hits, 28 RBI, 56 runs and producing 28 multi-hit games. Allen helped ECU to 73 wins in two seasons, including a 40-win campaign in 2015 – the Pirates first since 2011. He was also instrumental in guiding ECU to the 2015 American Athletic Conference Tournament title, where he was named Most Outstanding Player, and a No. 2 seed in the Coral Gables Regional.
A co-captain and Brooks Wallace Shortstop-of-the-Year Watch List candidate in 2015, Allen closed out his senior season starting 56 of 58 games at shortstop and leading the team in batting average (.349), hits (73) and on-base percentage (.408), while standing among the team leaders (top 4) in eight other statistical categories. He batted an impressive .500 (9-for-16) with two extra base hits and scored six runs in four AAC Tournament games earning MOP honors. Allen ranked among the conference leaders in batting average (third), assists (173/fifth), fielding double plays (37/t8th), hits (t8th) and on-base percentage (.408/t11th). Nationally he was one of the toughest hitters to strikeout, fanning just once in every 13.9 at-bats, and ranking 36th in the country.
As a junior, he started 37 of 46 games at shortstop batting .308 with 11 RBI and 18 runs scored. Allen led the club with 14 sac bunts (second in Conference USA), collected a pair of game-winning RBI (UNC and Southern Miss), recorded nine multi-hit games and ranked among the team leaders in average (third) and on-base percentage (4th/.362).
Prior to his arrival in Greenville, Allen earned a pair of letters at Brunswick Community College where he batted .359 (116-for-323) with 10 doubles, 51 RBI and 69 runs scored in 88 career games. As a sophomore he earned second-team All-America and first-team all-conference honors after batting .371 (62-for-167) with seven doubles and 35 RBI, while also taking home first-team all-defensive accolades. As a freshman, he helped the Dolphins to their fourth-straight 30-win season and a spot in the Region X DII championship game against Catawba Valley Community College following a season where he batted .346 (54-for-156) with three doubles, 16 RBI and 33 runs scored.
