Luke Cunningham enters his first season as the distance coach for East Carolina University Track & Field in 2026.
A native of Australia, Cunningham brings both elite competitive experience and an extensive coaching background to Greenville. He most recently competed at the University of New Mexico from 2023-25, playing a key role during one of the program’s most successful stretches in its recent NCAA history. During his time with the Lobos, he earned three All-Mountain West honors and was a two-time Mountain West Distance Medley Relay Champion.
Cunningham posted personal bests of 1:50.59 in the 800 meters and 3:39.74 in the 1500 meters, marks he achieved while self-coaching during the summer of 2025.
Prior to New Mexico, Cunningham competed at Wagner College in New York City from 2020-23. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Criminology from Wagner before completing a master’s degree in Exercise Science and Sport Management at New Mexico.
In addition to his collegiate success, Cunningham has built an impressive coaching résumé. He coached at Trinity Grammar School, one of Australia’s premier distance-running programs, from 2019-24, and worked with Pulse Performance—one of Australia’s leading club teams—from 2020-24. He also gained professional experience with Boost Treadmills from 2024-25, contributing to both the company’s marketing and medical sales teams.
Cunningham’s combined experience as an elite athlete, international coach and sport science professional positions him to lead ECU’s distance program into its next chapter.
