Sedrick Irvin, who owns over 22 years of playing and coaching experience at the high school, collegiate and professional levels, is in his first year as coordinator of football administration at East Carolina after officially filling the position on April 4, 2016.
Prior to accepting an offer to join head coach Scottie Montgomery's Pirate staff, Irving served as head football coach at Westminster Christian School in Miami, Fla. After taking over the varsity program in 2011, it only took three years for the Warriors to establish themselves as a perennial football power in south Florida with a state semifinals appearance in Class 3A. While at WCS, he mentored and developed prep All-America performers QB David Thompson (Miami), CB Timothy Irvin (Auburn) and RB Jordan Cronkrite (Florida).
Irvin's one-year tenure as running backs coach at Memphis in 2010 followed a two-year appointment as an intern on Nick Saban's staff at Alabama in 2008 and 2009.
Working primarily with the Tide's running backs, he helped Glenn Coffee rush for 1,383 yards and 10 touchdowns on the way to earning All-Southeastern Conference honors in 2008. A year later Irvin had the opportunity to tutor Mark Ingram, who won the Heisman Trophy and was named Sporting News National Player-of-the-Year after racking up 1,658 ground yards and 17 TDs to lead Alabama to the BCS title with a win over Texas.
Irvin, cousin of NFL Hall-of-Famer Michael Irvin, began his coaching career as offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and running backs coach at Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami in 2006 and spent two seasons directing the Raiders' passing attack and overseeing the school's strength and conditioning program.
Irvin's relationship with Saban began as a player at Michigan State from 1996 to 1998 where he became only the second rusher in Spartan history to record three-straight 1,000-yard seasons. He was a two-time All-Big Ten Conference selection and participated in the 1996 Sun Bowl and the 1997 Aloha Bowl. In three seasons of action, Irvin eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark on 15 occasions, including a career-best 238 against Penn State in 1997.
He left MSU after his junior campaign to enter the NFL Draft and was selected in the fourth round (103rd overall pick) by the Detroit Lions. As a rookie in 1999, he logged 133 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries and also tallied 233 receiving yards on 25 catches. Plagued by injuries, he left the Lions after two seasons before experiencing action in NFL Europe and with the Arena Football League.
Irvin, who graduated from Alabama in December 2009 with a degree in human environmental science, was a three-sport athlete at Miami Senior High School and a USA Today All-America choice as a running back in 1995.
