Mark Thompson begins his first year as the director of basketball operations at East Carolina and brings a skill set that makes him uniquely qualified to fulfill his duties. Prior to arriving in Greenville, Thompson was a certified personal trainer in the Orlando, Florida area. His unique training style has been endorsed by current NBA players and trainers, strength coaches from the Big XII and SEC as well Major League Baseball scouts and pro tennis players. Thompson has also been applauded by doctors from around the country for his techniques and attention to nutritional consultation with his clients.
As the Pirates' director of basketball operations, Thompson's responsibilities include handling the program's daily operations, coordinating its travel itineraries, assisting with scouting videos and overseeing the team's student managers. He will also oversee the overall operation of ECU's summer boy's basketball.
Thompson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Stetson University in 2002 and earned his MBA from Rollins College in 2005.
While at Stetson, Thompson was a combo guard for the Hatters and was named the 2002 FCA Central Florida Student-Athlete of the Year while being a Dean's List student. He was also the President of the Stetson chapter of FCA.
Upon graduation Thompson worked at Kanakuk Kamps, Inc., the largest camp of its kind boasting 18,000 campers and over 2,500 staff members. His duties included recruiting staff members from coast-to-coast, speaking, leadership development and heading up the basketball side of camp.
He spent the 2003-04 season as graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina where he served as an academic liaison between the men's basketball coaches and the university's academic staff. Some of his other responsibilities included producing scouting videos on opponents, player development and overseeing off-season strength and conditioning workouts. The Gamecocks finished the season by making their first NCAA tournament appearance in six years and finished the season with a 23-11 record.
A 1998 graduate of Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tenn., Thompson was a four-year letterwinner in basketball and a two-year letterman in soccer, tennis and track and field. He led the Wildcats to the Tennessee Final Four as a senior and earned all-state honorable mention and all mid-state honors.
