Jennifer Bonner was appointed to the East Carolina University Office of Student Development staff in April of 2005 and currently serves as the department's assistant director, men's basketball academic coordinator and learning specialist/tutor coordinator.
In addition to handling various leadership roles within the division, Bonner spearheads the learning assistance program by providing individual skill consultations, overseeing student evaluation referrals, acting as a liaison between the office and ECU's Disability Support Services and directing student-athlete study halls. From 2005 to 2014, she had oversight of student development's successful summer freshmen orientation program.
As the men's basketball academic tutor, the Pirates set a team cumulative grade point average (GPA) record in the spring of 2019, established an academic year GPA record for 2018-19, earned the 2018-19 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Academic Excellence Award and received a 1,000 academic progress rate (APR) score in the 2019-2000 academic year.
Bonner both held and currently holds committee assignments and affiliations with numerous internal and external entities, including the ECU Student Development Tutorial Services Committee (chair), Academic Integrity Education Committee (chair), Study Hall Taskforce (chair), Freshman Orientation Committee, ECU Mentor Summit, ECU Tutor Advisory Board, College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A).
Most recently, she earned a prestigious appointment to serve on the NCAA Initial Eligibility Waiver Committee - a role that will extend through Dec. 31, 2022.
She began her career in August of 2001 as an exceptional children's teacher for grades 2-3 with Beaufort County Schools before joining the Liberty Network of Child & Family Services staff as Coordinator of Therapeutic and Educational Services for its EARTH program.
A Washington, N.C., native, Bonner earned a bachelor’s degree in special education at East Carolina in 1999 before completing a master’s in recreational therapy administration at her alma mater two years later.
She and her husband Joseph are the parents of a son, Christopher.
