Darren Guensch enters his second season as ECU’s assistant coach in 2017-18. Guensch was named assistant women’s basketball coach at East Carolina University in May of 2016.
He serves as the primary recruiting coordinator for the Pirates and with his strong in-state ties aided in signing three North Carolina East-West All-Star selections in 2016.
Guensch joined the Pirates after two seasons under the same title at the College of Charleston and will contribute to player development and the coordination of ECU’s recruiting efforts.
Prior to his time with the Cougars, Guensch spent two years at UNC Greensboro as an assistant coach. He was responsible for the development of the Spartansí backcourt players and played a key role in guiding point guard Lucy Mason to Southern Conference Freshman-of-the-Year honors in 2013.
Before his stint at UNCG, Guensch was an assistant coach at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) following two seasons as the Rams’ director of basketball operations. VCU went 86-47 with Guensch on staff and earned four postseason bids, including its first NCAA Tournament selection in 2009 and a pair of WNIT appearances. The 2011-12 squad reached the WNIT Round of 16. He was responsible for the Rams’ perimeter player development and coached a pair of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) All-Rookie Team guards and an All-CAA talent in Andrea Barbour. He also helped usher in the No. 20 recruiting class among mid-majors, according to ESPN HoopGurlz.
Before serving two years as George Masonís director of basketball operations from 2006-08, Guensch got his start in coaching at Loudoun County High School in Leesburg, Va., serving as head coach of the freshman team and an assistant varsity coach for the 2005-06 season. He directed the freshman squad to a program-best 16-2 record and its first district championship. He also led Loudoun County’s varsity team to a school-best 29-2 record, district and regional championships and an appearance in the state semifinals.Â
Guensch graduated from Radford in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise, sport and health education before earning a master’s degree in the same discipline at George Mason in 2012. He married his wife, Devon, in 2007 and the couple welcomed their first child, Miles, in 2011 and their second, Layna, in 2016.Â
