Dave Alexander was one of the many football greats to play for East Carolina during the Stasavich era. A star fullback for the Pirates from 1963 to 1965, Alexander was named All-Southern Conference and Little All-America in 1965. During his three seasons, ECU had three consecutive 9-1 finishes and won the Tangerine Bowl Championship twice. He became the first 1,000-yard rusher in Pirate history with 1,029 yards in 1965 and finished his career with 2,112 yards rushing.
In 1966, Alexander was signed by the Oakland Raiders as a free agent. After the preseason he was placed on the taxi squad and was sent to Richmond to play in the then Continental Football League. A knee injury ended Alexander's career and he returned to ECU to complete his education, graduating in 1967.
